環境としてのメディアとパフォーマティブな体験

本展示は、原瑠璃彦氏（静岡大学）が研究主宰の “原瑠璃彦+YCAM 共同研究成果展示「Incomplete Niwa Archives 終らない庭のアーカイヴ」”を、YCAMの大階段上で、多くの方に開かれた展示として提案したものです。

本展示では、日本庭園独自の体験を再構築することに挑んでいます。実際に日本庭園に訪れた際に感じられる庭園の特性を、編集・切り取り・読み替えの操作によって、新たな姿へと異化させています。庭園内を歩くと、身体のあらゆる箇所を通して、私たちは匂いや、音や、周囲の自然を感じることができます。また、庭園では何か見る対象が具体的に定まっているわけでもなく、無意識にそれを眺めているのです。本展示では、人と庭園のそのような関係性を、別の形で再現することを試みました。

まず、YCAMの中でも象徴的な大階段に注目し、その上に鑑賞者の身体を委ねられる新たな造形を設計することを考えました。クッション性のある巨大なソファのような造形は、来館者が好きな場所を選び、好きな体勢で庭のアーカイブを眺めることを可能にしています。また、天井からは複数のディスプレイが吊られており、それらは映像の対象というより、アーカイブを体験する環境を生むものとして存在しています。ここでは、鑑賞者とメディア(アーカイブ)の関係性は限定されず、鑑賞者自身がその関係性を自由に選択できるのです。「無意識に庭を眺める」という、庭園を訪れたときに得られる独特の感覚を、展示空間ならではの手法で再現しています。

素材については、階段上の造形にウレタンフォームを使用しています。既存の階段寸法を用い、その倍数のモデュールをもつウレタンフォームで構成することで、階段という地形を拡張しつつも、様々な鑑賞体験を展開し得るフォーマット性を獲得しています。この展示空間は、まるで日本庭園のように常に移り変わり、終わりのない状況を作り出しているといえるでしょう。

Media as Environment and Performative Experiencte

This exhibition, overseen by Professor Rurihiko Hara of Shizuoka University, presents the joint research outcomes "Incomplete Niwa Archives" at the grand staircase of YCAM, proposed as an open exhibition accessible to a wide audience.

The exhibit attempts to reconstruct the unique experiences of Japanese gardens. It transforms the intrinsic qualities of these gardens, experienced firsthand, by editing, cutting, and reinterpreting, thus presenting them in an altered form. Walking through a garden, we unconsciously perceive smells, sounds, and the surrounding nature through various senses. The exhibition endeavors to recreate this type of interaction between people and gardens in a different format.

Focusing on YCAM's iconic grand staircase, we envisaged a new form where visitors could recline—a massive, cushion-like sofa that allows visitors to choose their spot and posture while viewing the garden archives. Suspended from the ceiling are multiple displays, not merely as objects of video but as elements creating an environment for experiencing the archives. Here, the relationship between the viewer and the media (archives) is not fixed, allowing viewers to freely choose their engagement. This method replicates the unique sensation of "unconsciously gazing at a garden" experienced when visiting an actual garden.

Regarding materials, polyurethane foam is used for the structures on the staircase. Utilizing the existing staircase dimensions and multiplying them into modules of polyurethane foam not only expands the terrain of the staircase but also creates a versatile format for diverse viewing experiences. This exhibition space continuously evolves and generates an endless state, much like a Japanese garden itself.
